CAREER GIRLS

do you ever feel like you are taken less seriously in the workplace,
only because you are a girl? and a young one?
i've been extremely lucky to work on an incredible team,
with both men and women who not only respect me and my work,
but teach and mentor me to grow both personally and professionally.
every once in awhile, though, someone says something that irks me.
for example:
i do a lot of recruiting in my current role, and therefore conduct
dozens of phone interviews every week.
the other day, i called this man for a routine interview.
i started by introducing myself and giving him a brief overview
of how the interview was going to go.
the guy started laughing, like he literally chuckled, and said,
"wow! that was quite the mouthful little lady!"
little lady?! seriously? my dad doesn't even call me that.
i couldn't help but think how differently he would've reacted
had i been an older male calling for the interview.

  1. Can't believe he had the guts to say that to the person who was calling him to set up an interview.. but,
    go you!! love this quote!

also this (though it pertains to women): "there's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women" but i always remember it.

  2. What an idiot! Oh my gosh reading that made my blood boil. How condescending! I can't believe he talked to you like that when he knew you were interviewing him. What is wrong with people? I have always looked up to women who have found the balance with a career and having a family. These are the women who have always inspired me. I wish everyone would be more encouraging men and women!
